Finally we also have consumer to consumer sales and that is when people use the internet to sell things to one another via websites like Craigslist, EBay, or apps like Offer Up. M commerce is ecommerce that is performed via wireless devices.  Currently there are over 2.6 billion smartphone users and that amount is expected to grow by more than two times by the year 2020 making m commerce increasingly important.

Ways to communicate on the web

There is a variety of different ways that we can communicate on the web.  We are going to explore a few different ways that we may already be familiar with.

Social Networking

Whether you want to share photos with friends and family or you are a recruiter for a company social network apps are by far the most popular ways to get it done. Facebook, twitter, and Instagram are among the most popular social networking apps available. You also have apps such as LinkedIn that are used by professionals to market themselves and network with other professionals in their field.

Email
Despite the overwhelming popularity of social networking sites email continues to be the most popular way of exchanging information.  Email is a more private way to share information with people over social networking.  However, you should be mindful of what is included in an email because even though it is a direct connections between users emails can still be shared and printed.

Wikis and Blogs
Wikipedia is the most popular wiki and anyone can contribute to Wikipedia.  Wikis are used as a collection of information that can be used by anyone and collaborated on by anyone.  Blogs are essentially online journals.  Anyone can create a blog and unlike a wiki it is usually only editable by one individual.

Podcasts and Webcasts
Podcasts are similar to blogs in a sense however podcasts contain MP3 audio files or sometimes video files.  Podcasts are usually used for educational purposes and can be created by anyone. What makes podcasts unique is that they download automatically to your device via apps such as iTunes. Webcasts are live streams of audio of video content therefore they do not usually download automatically to your devices.

Streaming Media
NetflixYouTube, and Pandora are among the most popular forms of streaming media.  It basically allows you to receive a continuous feed of video or audio instead of having to wait for the file to download completely before being able to enjoy it.  Imagine you want to watch a movie but had to wait 5 hours before you could actually watch it, sounds very inconvenient, but with streaming media we can watch or listen to different media instantaneously.

Web Browsers

With the creation of the TCP/IP protocol computers now had a language that they can use to talk to one another. Web browsers is a program that allows you to interact with other devices on the web.  One of the first internet browsers was developed by Netscape and it was the standard until Microsoft began prepackaging their PC's with Internet Explorer.  Soon after the launch of Internet Explorer Netscape was sold to AOL and now goes by Mozilla Firefox.

Most of us are familiar with the internet and have used the internet in one way, shape or form in the past. But how did the internet come to be and how did it get to where it is today?  In its simplest form the internet is basically a world wide network of computers that use a specific language to transfer information to one another.  The idea of a network of computers being able to communicate and transfer data between one another begin at MIT in the 1960's and the first successful transmission of data between two computers took place in 1969.  Researchers used what was called the ARPANET and the military was using the MILNET.  That was until the development of a universal language that would allow all computers to connect together called TCP/IP protocol and hence the birth of the internet.
